Biography

Bernardo de la Guardia, M.D., F.A.C.C., is a board-certified cardiologist specializing in Interventional Cardiology and practices at the following locations: The Woodlands, Springwoods, The Vintage and Huntsville.

Dr. de la Guardia was born in Queretaro, Mexico, and received his medical degree with honors from “Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey.” After graduating from medical school, he conducted research at Baylor College of Medicine under the Department of Critical Care and Pulmonary Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he was subsequently appointed Chief Resident and Junior Faculty. He then went on to complete his Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship and Interventional Cardiology training at the University of Texas, Houston, Medical School, where he was selected as Chief Fellow.

Dr. de la Guardia has been recognized as a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and is a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine with certification in Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology.

Dr. de la Guardia has been in practice with Woodlands North Houston Heart Center since 2001 and is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. He currently serves as Medical Director for the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at CHI St. Luke’s Health – The Woodlands and Lakeside Hospitals, and as Director for Cardiovascular Services at CHI St. Luke’s Health – The Vintage Hospital. Past professional appointments include Medical Director for the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and Medical Director for Cardiovascular Services at Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Woodlands, TX, as well as Chief of Staff for CHI St. Luke’s Health – Lakeside Hospital.

Dr. de la Guardia’s clinical interests include adult general cardiology and cardiac imaging including transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, carotid and peripheral arterial ultrasound and myocardial perfusion studies. He provides cardiac rhythm assessment and treatment by implantation of loop recorders and pacemakers. His invasive skills include coronary and peripheral angiography, percutaneous coronary interventions (including angioplasty, atherectomy, and coronary stents) and cardiac pump assisted high risk procedures. One of his advanced methods is performing these procedures via the radial artery access at the wrist, rather than the femoral artery at the groin, helping to minimize patient’s discomfort and reducing possibility of vascular complications.
